Lion attacks trainer at MGM Grand

LasVegasVegas.com - The Vegas Blog 8 Sep 2010, 7:30 pm CEST

On Sept. 1, one of the 400-pound lions inside MGM Grand's lion exhibit apparently turned on its trainer.

A honeymooning Montana couple at the link below caught the action, showing the lion attacking the trainer and biting his left leg, before being pushed off with the help of another trainer and a lioness.

Consulate Generals in Las Vegas

Las Vegas Logue 8 Sep 2010, 9:00 am CEST

If you have a need to get in touch with an embassy or consulate while staying in Las Vegas, it’s important to realize that the city is not a hub for these offices. In fact, there aren’t any embassies in Las Vegas at all (you’ll need to head to Los Angeles for that).

There are honorary consulate generals, however, but many of them have limited office hours. For details on when and where to find the consulate general that can help you, utilize the following resources:

Halloween in Las Vegas

Las Vegas Logue 7 Sep 2010, 9:00 am CEST

If you’re looking for the world’s largest, most outrageous Halloween costume party, you’ll find it in Las Vegas.

Whether they’re here for Memorial Day, Labor Day, New Year’s Eve or any random day of the week, visitors to Sin City love to party it up, so it shouldn’t be any surprise that the Strip comes alive in a parade of witches, werewolves, ghouls and goblins when October 31 rolls around.

Rates for Las Vegas hotels are usually higher over holidays like Halloween (especially if the holiday falls on a weekend), and space may be at a premium depending on where you want to stay so book early. Make arrangements for any particular shows or restaurants that know you’d like to visit while you’re in town. Special guests for the Halloween parties at the city’s nightclubs are announced in advance, so if there’s a particular party you’d like to attend or a certain celebrity you want to rub elbows with, get on the guest list as soon as possible.

Though specific events throughout Las Vegas vary from year to year, there are some Halloween classics that can be found every year in Las Vegas.

Harrah’s hosts a Halloween party at the Carnaval Court, an outdoor bar known for its bartenders. The party usually includes an array of psychics, live music, drink specials and cash prize giveaways for the best costumes. There is a modest fee to get in to the party.

One of the most anticipated Las Vegas Halloween events is the Fright Dome at Circus Circus. Often considered one of the top scariest haunted attractions in the United States, the Fright Dome is not appropriate for children under the age of 12. Spread over five acres are several haunted houses, professional character actors, live shows and, of course, the classic Adventuredome rides. The Fright Dome is open the entire month of October, and fastpass tickets go on sale months in advance.

Local haunted houses are everywhere in Las Vegas. If you want to leave the Strip but don’t want to leave the fun, chances are you can find a haunted house in just about every large parking lot in the city. In many cases, if there is a spook house of some sort, there is also a fun house, which may be more appropriate for young children.

To fully enjoy your Halloween in Las Vegas, it may be helpful to keep the following in mind:

  • They don’t call Las Vegas a playground for adults for nothing. Though there are plenty of things to do in Las Vegas with a family, this may not be the time to bring the kids … or the grandparents. Though there are lots of people sporting bare skin year round in Las Vegas, Halloween raises the stakes. Huge costume extravaganzas, professional dancers and giveaways for risque and creative clothing make for what would generally be considered an adult-only atmosphere.
  • It should go without saying, but don’t drink and drive. Traffic will likely be a nightmare and you deserve to have a good time. Park the car and take a cab or the bus.
  • Be safe. It’s easy to let your guard down when you’re hidden behind a mask. Keep an eye out for your friends and your drink, and let someone know where you’re going if you want to slip off with a stranger.

Jerry Lewis still bringing in MDA contributions

LasVegasVegas.com - The Vegas Blog 7 Sep 2010, 5:47 am CEST

It may have been less than the past two years, but Jerry Lewis still brings in the donations even in a tough economy.

His annual Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon from South Point Hotel & Casino pulled in $58.9 million, concluding today after a marathon 21.5 hours.

It's his 5th year at South Point, and the MDA has been running annually for 45 years.  Las Vegas performers Barry Manilow and Carrot Top also joined.

Types of Shows in Las Vegas

Las Vegas Logue 6 Sep 2010, 9:00 am CEST

Every night of the week there are thousands of seats at dozens of shows waiting to be filled in Las Vegas. These shows are often permanent fixtures and many have customized theaters to accommodate their performances.

The problem isn’t figuring out if you should see a show when you’re in Las Vegas but rather which show you should choose. With so many options available, it can be a very overwhelming decision. To help you narrow your choices, here are the different types of shows you can expect to encounter. We’ve also provided examples of each type of show, and there are several others that aren’t mentioned here. Many also fall into more than one category.

Comedy

There are always comedians coming and going on the Strip. Winner of America’s Got Talent and Mirage headliner Terry Fator is a crowd favorite as is Carrot Top at Luxor, though several other under-the-radar performers also entertain crowds. Some magic shows also incorporate some element of comedy in their performance such as the Mac King Comedy Magic Show.

Always be wary of taking the family to a comedy show. More often than not, they’re not appropriate for children.

Acrobatics

If you are traveling to Las Vegas for the fantastic and over-the-top, there are no shortage of shows featuring acrobats that will leave you wondering how, exactly, they did that. These shows often sweep audiences away as they move from one act to another in quick progression. Sometimes an underlying plot helps progress the show, but, for the most part, these performances are designed to transport audiences into another world that includes strong men, trapeze artists and contortionists but little story line.

Cirque du Soleil has several shows on the Las Vegas Strip, all of which include acrobatics to some degree, but KA, Mystere and O are among the most popular. Le Reve is a spectacular water-based show similar to O, while Matsuri mixes acrobatics with dance and circus acts. Most of the acrobatic-centered shows are family friendly.

>>Read a review of KA >>Read a review of Mystere

Magic

Prepare to be amazed by many magicians and illusionists in Las Vegas. Shows range from simple pulling-rabbits-from-hats routines to those that include near-death stunts. Some performers are more illusionists that traditional magicians (Criss Angel’s Believe is a good example).

Many magic shows have components of other types of shows. Penn and Teller, for example, serve up a show that is equal parts magic and comedy while headliner David Copperfield only performs drop-your-jaw magic. Not all magic shows are created equal nor are they all family friendly. Check for age restrictions before taking the kids.

>>Read a review of Penn & Teller

Family Friendly

The variety of shows in Las Vegas that are family friendly cover most of the general genres, so decide on your mood and pick a show that suits everyone. A handful of magic shows are appropriate for all ages, and some of the large-scale productions and Cirque shows have a display of colorful costumes, fun music and fast-paced storylines, which helps keep the little ones entertained. Gregory Popovich’s Comedy Pet Theater is designed with kids in mind. The Tournament of Kings, a dinner show that requires people to eat with their hands, brings out the kid in everyone (though a recent addition to the show schedule includes a performance without the meal).

What is particularly nice about many of the shows that cater to families is that they are not kid specific but rather can be enjoyed by everyone in the clan. The kids will appreciate these shows for their entertainment value while Mom and Dad will enjoy them for the artistry and showmanship. Check specific show schedules for rules regarding minimum age requirements.

>>Are you traveling with a family? Here are the best hotels for families in Las Vegas.

Musicians

There are many performance spaces along the Las Vegas Strip, some of which cater to musicians on a touring schedule, but Caesars Palace Colloseum is probably the best known space for permanent headliners, and Celine Dion, Elton John and Cher have all called the stage home for a healthy duration of time. Garth Brooks and Gordie Brown are two other popular acts.

Las Vegas has a concert line-up of big names all the time, and regardless of the night of the week, chances are you’ll find someone in town that you recognize. The most popular venues for rotating artists include the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay, Pearl Theater at The Palms and The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Adults Only

Leave the kids at home when you head out for these shows, all of which require audience members to be at least 18 or 21 years old, depending on the show. This is Las Vegas, so scantily clad (or nude) performers are not out of the question. Some of these shows use sex as a vehicle throughout the show, such as Zumanity, which tags itself as the “sensual side of Cirque.” Peepshow and Bite are other popular adult-only offerings.

Because most of these shows involve nudity, leave your camera in your hotel room or check it at the theater door. If you’re caught using it, you will be asked to leave the show without a refund.

Production Shows

Who needs Broadway when you’ve got Las Vegas? In addition to being a hotspot for shows by Cirque du Soleil, this is also a hub for large production shows such as The Lion King, Phantom and Jersey Boys to settle in. Although most shows have been altered so that they can be watched in one sitting without an intermission, nearly all of them receive rave reviews from the critics.

One of the things about the production shows that you won’t find with most shows in Las Vegas is that there is a plot line. In many of the entertainment-based performances, it’s hard to know when you’ve reached the end, but it’s easy to gauge the progress of these shows as they progress.

Old School Vegas

If you traveled all the way to Las Vegas on a search to find coin slots and old neon signs, then an old school Las Vegas show is right up your alley. These shows have stood the test of time and continue to be relatively popular with a discerning crowd. They don’t necessarily have the glitz and glam of the newer, fast-paced entertainment, but they will leave you with a small pang of nostalgia. Jubilee! is filled with classic showgirls while Barry Manilow pleases crowds with old favorites. Though new to Vegas, Matt Goss has an act reminiscent of the days of yore with a swing band and classic dancers.

Many of these shows are in the older resorts and don’t sell out as quickly as some of the more popular shows on the Strip, so it’s possible to get tickets for these performances at a fraction of the rate that many of the other shows go for.

>>Read a review of Jubilee!

Tributes

There is no shortage of shows when it comes to celebrity tributes. After all, you’re visiting the city to see Elvis, Britney Spears, Joan Rivers and Christina Aguilera, right? For the most part, these tribute shows, which include American Superstars and  Legends in Concert, are kitschy and nothing to write home about, but they are fun. A lot of these shows are also low-key and not as well known as many of the other shows on the Strip, which also makes them more affordable.

Cirque du Soleil has recently entered this category with its latest show openings on the Strip. The Beatles: Love is a tribute to the Fab Four while Viva Elvis honors the music of Elvis Presley. Rumor has it that a new Cirque show will pay a tribute to Michael Jackson.

First Friday Las Vegas Arts Festival

Las Vegas Logue 2 Sep 2010, 9:00 am CEST

The Las Vegas arts scene has been around for many years, but it wasn’t until 2002 when a non-profit organization known as Whirlygig, Inc., began hosting First Friday that the arts community in the city was made more accessible to everyone. First Friday has turned into a huge block party and arts street festival (encompassing 20 total blocks) that occurs the first Friday of every month from 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.

The main festival area is five blocks in downtown Las Vegas area on Main Street and Casino Center between Charleston Boulevard and Imperial. This is closed off to traffic, and artists, musicians and entertainers spread out across the sidewalks. A wide array of jewelry, paintings, ceramics, crafts, photography, textiles, clothing, music and glassware are on sale from street vendors. More than 80 local businesses are open as part of First Friday, including antique, furniture, vintage clothing and art stores. There are many art galleries in this area as well, and all are open for viewing during First Friday.

The Arts Factory, a two-story building with several galleries packed inside, is one of the main draws during First Friday. It has an impressive range of art for sale, and many of the galleries have rotating exhibits. There is usually a living art piece available for viewing through the front window of the building.

It is not uncommon to see street performers throughout the festival area. Several musicians play on street corners, and occasionally there are fire breathers, fortune tellers, ice sculptors and other interesting characters wandering around First Friday. Local restaurants and bars are open and welcome festival revelers, and several street food vendors also set up shop in the area.

Parking near the main festival area is limited and can be expensive, but the First Friday committee offers a free shuttle, which runs every half hour from the Clark County Government Center (where parking is free) to the Holsum Design Center, Commerce Street studios, Colorado and Main galleries and festival area, and Main and Boulder Arts Factory area. This part of town is also easily accessible from the Las Vegas Strip, and visitors hoping to check out the local art scene can take a short cab ride to reach it.

First Friday is really a labor of love and has ebbed and flowed over the years as funding comes and goes. It is free to attend First Friday, but there is a table set up in the main festival area that is open for donations if you’d like to support the event.

Dining at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino

Las Vegas Logue 1 Sep 2010, 9:00 am CEST

Because it is located away from most of the mainstream hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino has to be able to stand on its own. As such, the dining options at the resort are plentiful, ranging from hip Mexican cuisine to around-the-clock cafes.

Nobu

Restaurant owner and chef Nobu Matsuhisa is the mastermind behind Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s innovative Japanese cuisine. Menu offerings include sushi and a variety of seafood, all served in a dining room featuring bamboo pillars, birch trees and a seaweed wall. If the food isn’t enough to entice visitors, the attention to detail and unique decor is.

Mr. Lucky’s 24/7

Looking for basic American fare? Your search stops at Mr. Lucky’s 24/7, a family-friendly joint that offers the classics—burgers, fries, sandwiches, pizza and even chocolate sundaes. The diner is outfitted in rock-and-roll memorabilia and is conveniently (though not surprisingly) open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Though the prices at Mr. Lucky’s are cheap anyway, stop by Monday through Thursday from 1:00 a.m.-5:00 a.m. for bone yard specials starting at $3.95. Another favorite is Mr. Lucky’s all-you-can-eat prime rib, available for $9.99 daily from 4:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m.

Espumoso Caffe

If you’re in need of a pick-me-up, stop by Espumoso Caffe for an espresso drink, loose leaf tea or blended smoothie. In addition to beverages, Espumoso Caffe offers quick meals on the go including paninis, empanadas, desserts and gelatos.

Metro Pizza

Las Vegas Logue 31 Aug 2010, 9:00 am CEST

When most people are heading out to grab a pizza, they mention that they’re simply going out for pizza. In Las Vegas, if you’re planning on going out for pizza, you make special mention if you’re going to Metro Pizza.

Locally owned and operated, Metro Pizza is a Las Vegas Valley favorite. It is frequently voted as the best pizza joint in town by locals. This is no make-and-bake type of place. There’s no rush to get out the door so that more people can fill the seats. Metro Pizza isn’t a place you stop by on your way home to grab a pizza; it’s a destination.

Unlike many pizza parlors that have fairly standard offerings of a dozen or so pies, Metro Pizza has an extensive menu, starting with a number of appetizers. For some strange reason, the nuclear fries (hot and spicy) are a particular favorite to start off a meal. For those who prefer to keep the calories in check, a number of salads are on offer.

Guests can certainly order a standard pizza, but it’s the specialty pizzas that draw crowds. The Flying Piggle has BBQ pork, butter pickles and crispy onion strings; the New Haven is topped with chopped clams and garlic. For the authentic New York pizza experience, order an East Side pie. The Mulberry Street comes with breaded eggplant and ricotta cheese. Sausage, peppers and onions top the Mott Street. Dough is made fresh daily, vegetables are of the highest quality and only select cheese and choice meats make it atop these pizzas.

There is also a healthy selection of calzones, subs, dinner plates and Italian-American favorites (i.e. chicken fingers and cheeseburgers).

Metro Pizza’s atmosphere is open and inviting. Wait staff are kind and service is efficient.

There are five Metro Pizza locations in Las Vegas, with a sixth in the works. Current locations are:

  • 1395 East Tropicana Avenue
  • 4001 South Decatur Boulevard
  • 4178 Koval Lane
  • 4111 Boulder Highway (inside Boulder Station)
  • 1420 West Horizon Ridge Parkway (Henderson)
